LaCorte's deep double leads St. Henry to 8-6 victory

Today's Reds Futures High School Showcase games are postponed

Tied 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, senior Tony LaCorte doubled to deep center field to drive in the go-ahead run, leading St. Henry's baseball team to an 8-6 win over Newport Central Catholic.

LaCorte picked up the win on the mound, throwing the final two innings and striking out two, improving to 2-1. Rex Rogers singled to start the final-inning rally for St. Henry before scoring on LaCorte's double. LaCorte was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Senior first baseman Lars Meiman went 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Crusaders.

St. Henry moved to 6-8, while NewCath fell to 7-8.

Ludlow 12, Dayton 2: Evan Slone hurled a complete game and struck out eight to move to 2-0.

Tyler Durham supplied the big hit of the game, a three-run home run, to help pace Ludlow to 6-2.

Conner 5, Scott 3: Conner was led by the trio of Gosnay, Ross and Ostertag on Wednesday, picking up the win over Scott to move to 7-3on the year.

Softball

Notre Dame 5, Highlands 3: Haylee Smith went the distance and struck out seven batters to improve to 6-0 for Notre Dame. Laura Fink finished 2-for-4 and picked up her 100th career stolen base for Notre Dame. The Pandas improved to 11-1.

NewCath 11, Holy Cross 0: Haley Meyers threw five no-hit innings to move to 8-1. It was Meyers' second no-hitter in the last three outings.

Molly Mertle drilled a two-run double to end the game in the sixth inning. The win moved NewCath to 8-3, while Holy Cross fell to 5-9.

Girls' tennis

Beechwood 3, Villa Madonna 2: Emily and Liz Pawsat each won singles matches to help Beechwood go to 7-0.

Ohio baseball

Western Hills 12, Oyler 1 (six innings): Senior pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez recorded his second career no-hitter, striking out 17, to lead Western Hills.

Rodriguez walked one batter in the second inning, who later went on to score on a passed ball. The only other out was a groundout to second.

Senior center fielder Deion Cook went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Sophomore Tommy Steadman went 3-for-4, helping Western Hills improve to 5-3. Oyler fell to 2-2.

Talawanda 3, Northwest 1: Dakota Byrd tossed a no-hitter on to lead Talawanda. Byrd struck out seven batters and helped Talawanda move to 3-6.

Ohio softball

Taylor 6, Reading 5 (eight innings): With the bases loaded and no outs, Kelsey Scudder drew a walk to give the Yellowjackets the comeback win.

Taylor trailed 5-1 entering the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Ashley Bauer, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, knocked in the game-tying runs.

The Yellowjackets improved to 3-5, while Reading fell to 4-5.

Seton 8, St. Ursula 2: Junior Hannah Wegman went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI to lead the Saints. Sophomore Jess Beeler was 2-for-2 with a double and a RBI, while senior Alyssa Lyons went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior pitcher Chelsea Zang struck out nine batters, as Seton improved to 4-6. St. Ursula fell to 4-3.
