No autopsy for Otto Warmbier, per family's request

Otto Warmbier detained for a 'hostile act.'

 

The funeral for Otto Warmbier will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at his alma mater, Wyoming High School, 106 Pendery Ave.

It will be an open service, according to a news release from Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum.

"All those that wish to join his family in celebrating his life are cordially invited," the release states. 

Warmbier is the the 22-year-old Wyoming, Ohio man who died Monday after being returned from North Korea in a coma.  The University of Virginia student spent nearly a year and a half in detention in that secretive country. 

No autopsy for Warmbier

 

Clues in the mysterious death of Otto Warmbier may come from the Hamilton County Coroner.

But there will be no autopsy, the coroner's office said, at the request of the family.

The coroner's office performed an "external examination," according to a statement released Tuesday afternoon. Officials there are also examining Warmbier's medical records.

"No conclusions about the cause and manner of Mr. Warmbier’s death have been drawn at this time as there are additional medical records and imaging to review and people to interview," the statement read. "Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of Mr. Warmbier at this time of their tragic loss."

In their statement Monday, Wambier's parents did not cite a specific cause of death, but cited "awful, torturous mistreatment" by North Korea. Doctors had described Warmbier's condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness" and said he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause

He arrived in Ohio on June 13 after being held for more than 17 months.
