Racist posters hung on Miami U. campus

Several white nationalist posters have popped up on the Miami University's Oxford campus in recent days.

Claire Wagner, a Miami spokeswoman, said the university is aware of some posters hung inside some academic buildings.

“We don’t know who posted them. Student groups who post fliers have to have them approved through the Office of Student Activities, so it may have been someone from off-campus,” she said. “”As they’re being found, they’re being removed.”

Graduate student Cat Munroe saw one such poster on a public posting board outside the university's Business, Engineering, Science and Technology Library near High Street last week.

The poster read: "Tired of Anti-White Propaganda in college? You aren't alone." It included a QR code that leads to a racist, anti-Semitic website.

Munroe said she wasn't surprised to see the poster given the climate surrounding the recent election. But she was dismayed nonetheless.

“I was horrified and dismayed to think of the students walking by that who are students of color and how hostile that would be when they’re trying to learn," she said.

Munroe said she and the other student removed the sign from the posting board.

Another photo making the social media rounds on campus shows two posters hung in a window. One looks similar to the one Munroe saw, and another that reads, "Not seeing the America you want? Start changing it today!"

The poster features a white man and woman holding two babies, with gnarled black hands reaching toward them. Among other things, the hands are labeled "BLM," for Black Lives Matter, and "LGBTQ."

“In general, Miami embraces diversity of all kinds," Wagner said. "We are on a path to inclusive excellence, as expressed repeatedly by our president, Greg Crawford, and we intend to stay that path.”
