A new brewery should appeal to West-Siders ready to sample something unique. The 13 Below Brewery began operation in Sayler Park in September.

"It's a perfect location," said Doug Menkedick, who started the brewery with his wife, Anne, and several other acquaintances.

The brewery is located at the former Mariner's Inn, 7391 Forbes Road, by Fernbank Park.

"We wanted to come up with a creative name," Menkedick said about 13 Below Brewery. Its name is based on the establishment's distance from a local landmark, according to Menkedick. The brewery is 13 miles south of Cincinnati's Public Landing, he said.

Although the brewery is one of Sayler Park's first, the idea had been under consideration for a number of years by Menkedick, brothers Dick and Ray Busche and their wives, Lyn and Monique, and Bob and Cindy Luebbering.

"We're using their recipes," said Menkedick.

These recipes include:

A special Scotch ale, River Castle amber ale, which is named after an amusement park which had occupied the site prior to the Mariner's Inn

A brown ale with the unique name of "Confused 13."

"Another characteristic of the bar is we have 13 taps," Menkedick said. The 13th tap will be for what he calls the "Brewmaster Special," which will be different seasonal ales launching with a "Fall Ale" this October.

Patrons will also notice something unusual about the main bar and tables. They were created from the flooring of a former bowling alley.

The 13 Below Brewery will have a capacity of around 200 and provide indoor and outdoor seating. It will also have handicapped-accessible bars.

Menkedick said he and the others wanted to capture an ambiance which appeals to all generations.

"Our goal was to create a warm and inviting environment for family and friends," he said.  "We are not one size fits all."

The 13 Below Brewery is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, 4 to 11 p.m. Fridays, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.
