500 hours, 101 lamps, one village

The historic gas lights are a large part of the charm of Glendale and over the past year, a group of determined neighbors have been working to keep it that way.

One by one, volunteers fanned out to refurbish 101 out of the 118 century-old lamps in the Village. They contributed more than 500 hours, priming and painting the lights after each was professionally sandblasted.

The project was funded by Glendale Heritage Preservation and supported by the Village Service Department. The work was coordinated by Street Foreman Tom Aldefer and Glendale Heritage Preservation member Rachel Schmid.
