If you could go anywhere in the world this year, where would it be?

The New York Times has 52 suggestions. And Cincinnati is one of them.

The Queen City came in at No. 8 on the Times' list of "52 Places to Go in 2018," beating out places such as Fiji and Glasgow, Scotland. The only other United States city that cracked the Top 10 was New Orleans, Louisiana, which placed first.

So, what drew the Times to Cincinnati?

Part of it had to do with Over-the-Rhine and its restaurants and microbreweries, the latter of which the Times mentioned earlier this month when it named Cincinnati a bargain destination. Another part had to do with — brace yourselves — the Cincinnati Bell Connector.

But what appeared to be the Times' biggest draw to Cincinnati was the city's music and arts scene — specifically, the 1878 landmark Music Hall, which reopened last year after a $143-million renovation.

It's not the first time the Times has made mention of the building, which was designed by architect Samuel Hannaford. In October, the Times said the concert hall's renovation can provide a roadmap for David Geffen Hall, the home of the New York Philharmonic.

The Otto M. Budig Theater

The publication also made mention of the newly expanded Ensemble Theater Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, which in 2017 moved into the Otto M. Budig Theater "where seats, none more than 20 feet from the stage, guarantee theatrical immersion."

The Times previously acknowledged the trio of Queen City performing arts theaters in August, when reporters spent 36 hours exploring Cincinnati from head to toe.

Cincinnati isn't a stranger to travel lists like the Times'. In fact, earlier this year it was highlighted on American Express Essentials' "Destination Hotlist," and last year it ranked among Travel and Leisure's best places to visit in 2017.

That exposure, in turn, has a noticeable impact on the city, according to Julie Calvert, executive director of Source Cincinnati, which focuses on marketing in the region.

"The publications paying attention to Cincinnati are ones that are among the most influential," Calvert said. "When Cincinnati shows up in them time and time again ... it tells people this is a city that’s alive and vibrant, and they want to be here.”
