Driver of car that hit, killed West Clermont student identified

The driver of the car that struck and killed a West Clermont Middle School student on Nov. 4 has been identified.

Gary Gilkison, 28, of Batavia, was driving a black 2009 Ford Fusion southbound on Summerside Road and approaching the intersection of Parkland Drive, according to the crash report.

The group of pedestrians, including Patrick “Patchy” Barkey, 13, was walking on the right side of the road with their backs to the car, the report said. 

The car struck Barkey, causing fatal injuries to the eighth-grader from West Clermont Middle School, the report said. According to the crash report, Gilkison was driving 33 mph and the posted speed limit was 40 mph.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. in the 1200 block of Summerside Road in Union Township, Union Township Police said. According to the crash report, alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor.

In a Nov. 5 news release, Union Township Police said two other juveniles were struck and transported to Mercy Health Anderson where one was treated and released. The other was then transported to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
