Drue Chrisman saved Kerry Coombs a trip to Australia.

Chrisman, the La Salle standout junior punter, verbally committed to Ohio State this afternoon, completing a flurry of recruiting activity this spring.

Chrisman called Ohio State assistant coach Coombs Monday night and spoke with Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer this afternoon.

Coombs told Chrisman the commitment saved him a recruiting trip to Australia for a punter. Coombs and Meyer told Chrisman his commitment made their day today.

Drue Chrisman committed to Ohio State today.

Chrisman, who is 6 feet 4 and 200 pounds, also had offers from Indiana, Kentucky, BYU, Florida State and UCLA. He visited the Ohio State spring game in April. The Buckeyes offered on March 31.

Chrisman had narrowed his choices to Florida State, BYU and Ohio State before selecting the Buckeyes.

Chrisman said he felt the "most comfortable" at Ohio State and likes the proximity of Columbus along with the football program and academics. He plans to study business and finance.

Chrisman, an Enquirer Division II first-team selection this past season, was second-team all-state, first-team all-district and first-team all-GCL South for the state champion Lancers (14-1).

La Salle did not attempt a fake punt last season, but Chrisman said that is a possibility this season.

Chrisman, who lives in Monfort Heights, had a long punt of 69 yards his sophomore year and 60 yards his junior year. His hang time increased during his junior season.

Chrisman is the area's sixth football player in the 2016 class to make a verbal college commitment.
