Stiene lifts Ursuline to brink of title

Ursuline's Danielle Stiene allowed just one hit and struck out 18 McAuley batters to earn a complete-game 2-0 softball win Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to her pitching performance, Stiene also smacked a game-winning two-run double in the sixth inning to supply the only runs of the game.

Each team entered with a 7-1 conference record. The win gives Ursuline a chance to clinch the Girls Greater Catholic League with a win over Mount Notre Dame on Thursday.

The win moved Ursuline to 12-6, while McAuley dropped to 10-8.

Harrison 5, Edgewood 4: With runners on first and second, junior pitcher Erin Engstrom struck out the final batter of the game to improve to 15-4.

Freshman shortstop Madison Huber broke a 2-2 tie in the third inning with a three-run single for the Wildcats. Edgewood scored two runs in the sixth inning to narrow the gap, but Engstrom got out of the jam in the final inning.

Harrison (19-6) clinched the Southwest Ohio Conference regular season title. The Wildcats are No. 10 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll.

Taylor 4, Finneytown 3: Kaylyn Schmitz earned the complete-game victory thanks to her own clutch hit.

Caitlyn Bowman led off the ninth inning with a double and came around to score on Schmitz's base hit.

Taylor is now 13-5, while Finneytown dropped to 9-6.

Mason 6, Oak Hills 0: Tory Stewart struck out 13 batters on her way to her third career no-hitter.

Gabby LaSala supplied all the offense Stewart would need with her Greater Miami Conference-leading sixth home run of the year.

Mason moved to 18-4, while the Highlanders fell to 16-10.

Milford 4, Glen Este 3: Freshman Valerie Thompson pitched an 11-strikeout complete game, helping Milford – No. 6 in the Division I area coaches' poll – to its first Eastern Cincinnati Conference softball title.

Tied 3-3 in the final inning, Thompson hit a one-out walk-off single. Thompson finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate.

Senior Bailee Miller led Glen Este with two RBI.

Loveland 11, Anderson 0: Olivia Pifer picked up the shutout as Loveland moved to 15-8.

Cincinnati Country Day 13, St. Bernard 1: Missy Dieckman-Meyer struck out 14 batters to move to 10-3. Victoria Paff, Olivia Robinson and Kayla Chisholm combined to finish 6-for-8 with six RBI to lead the CCD offense. The win moved CCD to 10-3.

Baseball

Mason 5, Middletown 2: Rodney Hutchison threw a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts to earn the win. Mason (18-4) led the entire game, but the lead was 3-2 until Michael Beebe hit a two-run double in the seventh.

Mason moved to 18-4, while Middletown dropped to 5-15.

Harrison 3, Edgewood 2: Gage Bley drove in Tylyn James with the game-winning run in the eighth inning to help Harrison (18-7) clinch at least a share of the Southwest Ohio Conference title. AJ Glines picked up the win on the mound, moving to 5-1. The win puts Harrison at 18-7 on the year, while Edgewood moves to 7-18.

Goshen 14, Bethel-Tate 8: Senior Paul Collins went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead the Warriors. Sophomore Isaac Hart was 2-for-5 with a triple and four RBI, while senior Kyle Judd went 2-for-4 with four RBI for Goshen (11-7).
