The Reds announced Friday they have hired former manager Lou Piniella to serve in a consulting capacity as a senior advisor to baseball operations.

Piniella is expected to spend some time with the team in spring training, according to the team's announcement.

Piniella managed the Reds from 1990 - when he led the team to its most recent World Series title - to 1992. He managed the Yankees in 1986 and 1987, and again in 1988. Since managing the Reds, he has managed the Mariners (1993-2002), the Devil Rays (2003-2005) and the Cubs (2007-2010).

In three seasons as the Reds' manager, Piniella was 255-231. In 23 seasons as a manager, his record was 1835-1713. The pennant and World Series title he won in Cincinnati were the only ones he won as a manager.
