Moeller wrestling to honor wrestling coach Gaier

Moeller wrestling coach Jeff Gaier is retiring after 29 years.

Moeller coach Jeff Gaier is very proud of the impact he left on the wrestlers in his program.

And those associated with the highly successful team will have an opportunity to thank him for his 29 years of coaching on April 21 when Gaier will be recognized at a special ceremony at the O'Connor Center Wrestling Room.

The event will celebrate his contributions to the school and wrestling program and will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Anyone associated with the wrestling program over the years is invited to attend.

Gaier, 54, who is the director of Moeller's Information Technology Center, announced his retirement from coaching March 12. He had three state runner-up teams at Moeller in 2007, 2001 and 2000. His teams had 15 state top-10 team finishes.

The Crusaders had 71 individual state placers including 12 state champions; Moeller had 153 state qualifiers during his 29 years of coaching.

BOYS' BASKETBALL: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski made an in-home visit with Franklin junior shooting guard Luke Kennard on Thursday night, according to Franklin coach Brian Bales. Kennard, one of the nation's top players in the 2015 class, verbally committed to Duke on March 24.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Hughes senior Courizma Williams signed with Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio, on April 9. As a senior, she averaged 17.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.9 steals, 2.2 assists and 1.3 blocks for Hughes. She scored in doubles figures in all but one game and achieved a season-high 26 points on Feb. 5. She was the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference player of the year.

BOYS' LACROSSE: Sycamore senior attackman Jordan Argyriou was selected as the JJ Huddle Boys' Lacrosse Player of the Week for Ohio. Through seven games he had 27 goals and 11 assists. He had seven goals and two assists against Springboro and he had six goals and three assists against Centerville, accordng to Sycamore coach Greg Cole. He is verbally committed to Wilmington College.

FOOTBALL: Reading senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Michael McKinney committed to West Virginia Wesleyan, according to former Reading coach Scott Thamann. He was first-team All-Cincinnati Hills League.

OHSAA: The attendance and financial reports from the five rounds of the 2013 football playoffs were presented to the Board of Directors on April 10. The OHSAA added a division in 2013 and attendance was up 24,102 overall from 2012, but the increase in expenses was greater than the increase in revenue and the overall profit was down $49,298. Profit from the football playoffs, which was $1,333,875 in 2013, accounts for approximately 30 percent of the OHSAA's annual operating expenses.

MEN'S BOWLING: Urbana University senior James Tucker qualified as an individual for the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Reno Monday. Tucker is a 2010 graduate of Dater High School. ⬛
