Ohio baseball

For the first time in more than two years, Elder's baseball squad beat nationally ranked Moeller 5-1 at Crosley Field in Blue Ash.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, scored a run in each of the first two innings to give junior pitcher Shane Smith the room he needed for a complete-game performance. Smith allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Elder added three runs in the top of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI-triple from Johnny Lammers. Dominic Faillace had a pair of doubles for the Panthers.

Moeller, ranked No. 1, is 28-5 against the Greater Catholic League South since 2011, and its last loss to the Panthers was March 28, 2012.

Moeller's been limited to one run just three times in its last 71 games, according to the GCL website.

Elder is 3-1 and Moeller falls to 5-1.
