Highlands gets a win before the playoffs

In the last game of the regular season, Highlands defeated host Simon Kenton 9-5 Saturday in eight innings.

Highlands scored four runs in the top of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie.

With one out and one on, junior center fielder Alex Veneman hit an RBI double. That was followed up by an Allen Murray RBI single and a Brady Murray RBI. The fourth run was scored on a fielding error.

Junior reliever Jake Noe pitched came on in relief in the fifth inning and finished the game to earn his first win this season.

Highlands (18-17) is ranked No. 5 in Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, while Simon Kenton is No. 9.

Highlands will face either Dayton or Newport Wednesday at 5 p.m in the 36th District semifinals.

Conner 10, Campbell County 3: Sophomore third baseman Jake Owens belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the game away for Conner.

Senior catcher Blake Hart went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI for the Cougars.

Conner, which has now won six of its last seven games, improves to 20-9.

Walton-Verona 6, Holy Cross 5: Sophomore catcher Garret Lehkamp went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead Walton-Verona.

Senior first baseman Curtis Bramkamp also had two RBI and freshman second baseman Jeremy Moran went 2-for-4 for the Bearcats.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Chance Sullivan got the win
