Mason takes care of business early vs. Lakota East

In a matchup of top 5 softball teams, Mason scored four runs in the top of the first inning to propel it to a 6-1 win over Lakota East Monday.

Mason (17-4), ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I coaches' poll, extended its current winning streak to 14 games. The Comets last loss came on April 11 in a 5-4 defeat at the hands of No. 3 Fairfield. Lakota East, ranked No. 4, fell to 19-4.

With two outs in the inning, the Comets strung together three consecutive singles to score their four runs. Junior Hailey Ellis and senior Liz Hillen knocked in a run apiece with their base hits. Senior Casey Miller followed with a two-run single, which provided more than enough offense for Mason.

Miller was 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI.

Lakota East answered in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Tara Manning doubled and later scored on a Hanna Messer single. Manning finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Comets, however, tacked on two more runs in the second, and the score held up.

Senior pitcher Tory Stewart struck out six, allowing just the one run, to improve to 14-2. Her counterpart, Kianah Towe, allowed just two earned runs in the loss, falling to 11-2.

Lakota West 11, Princeton 0 (five innings): Senior pitcher Ashley Sharp threw a five inning no-hitter, striking out nine batters, to move to 9-5.

Junior Marisa Thompson went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple to lead the Firebirds. Junior Haley Johnson was 2-for-3 with a triple, helping Lakota West improve to 17-6 this season.

Oak Hills 9, Colerain 8: Tied 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Taylor Wilp drew a bases loaded walk, and the game-winning run crossed the plate for the Highlanders.

Entering the final inning, freshman Kiara Murrell was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After advancing to second base on a Val Hudepohl single, Beth Drew was later hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wilp drew the walk to score Murrell for the win.

Junior pitcher Brooke Shad picked up the win while also recording two RBI. Sophomore Alex Biehl also had two RBI for Oak Hills. Oak Hills improved to 16-9 this season. Colerain falls to 3-17.

Harrison 12, Edgewood 7: Sydney Turner drove in six runs to help lead Harrison.

Turner finished 2-for-4 with a grand slam to help propel Harrison to the win.

The win moves Harrison to 17-7 on the year, while Edgewood falls to 10-12.

New Richmond 5, Goshen 3: Cidney Adams picked up the complete-game victory to improve to 7-12 on the year for New Richmond.

New Richmond led from the start and held off a late rally to move to 8-15 on the year.

Rachel Zawacki finished 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead the New Richmond offense.

Clermont Northeastern 5, Georgetown 1: Junior catcher Allison Gilkerson went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Rockets.

Junior Olivia Hoerth had a double and two RBI, while sophomore Lindsey Wright was 2-for-4 with a RBI, helping Clermont Northeastern improve to 8-8.

Baseball

Clermont Northeastern 10, Gerogetown 0 (five innings): Senior pitcher Chase Johnson allowed just one hit and struck out seven to earn the shutout win.

Junior center fielder Brandon Mullins went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the Rockets. and senior left fielder Blake Bishop was 2-for-2 for the Rockets, as Clermont Northeastern improved to 11-11 this season.
