  • Samuel Onyenweaku was found naked in the victim's private bathroom.

A nursing supervisor was suspicious Nov. 24 when she tried to enter the room of a 92-year-old resident at the Deer Park nursing home and found the door locked.

She unlocked the door and found the woman on her bed, naked from the chest down because her gown had been pushed up to her breasts. Under the woman's bed was a pair of man's pants, underwear and shoes.

The room's private bathroom also was locked. When it was opened, the nursing supervisor saw Samuel Onyenweaku standing there. Onyenweaku, 22, of West Chester, was a nurse's aide at the Amber Park Nursing Home in the 3800 block of E. Galbraith Road.

Onyenweaku was convicted Monday of rape, felonious assault and patient abuse. Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Melba Marsh, hearing the case without a jury at Onyenweaku's request, convicted him.

"She died in February of an unrelated condition," Assistant Prosecutor Anita Vizedom said.

The woman was a widow with no children, who didn't deserve the abuse she received near the end of her life by someone who was supposed to be caring for her, Vizedom said.

"She had had a normal, good, decent life. She had been a school teacher in Kentucky," Vizedom said.

"This is terrible. She did know what was happening."

The woman was bed-ridden and unable to communicate. Were it not for the nurse supervisor, her abuse may have gone unreported.

"He's a predator. He chose her because she was not going to be able to communicate," Vizedom said.

The victim initially was taken to the hospital but soon was released to Hospice. "This was the end of her life," Vizedom said.

When he is sentenced July 28, Onyenweaku can be sent to prison for 20 years.
