No. 4 Elder knocks off No. 1 Moeller

Today's Reds Futures High School Showcase games are postponed

For the first time in more than two years, Elder's baseball squad beat Moeller 5-1 Thursday night at Crosley Field.

The Panthers, ranked No. 4 in The Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, scored a run in each of the first two innings to give junior pitcher Shane Smith the room he needed for a complete-game performance. Smith allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Elder added three runs in the top of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI-triple from Johnny Lammers. Dominic Faillace had a pair of doubles for the Panthers.

Moeller, ranked No. 1, is 28-5 against the Greater Catholic League South since 2011 and its last loss to the Panthers was March 28, 2012.

Moeller's been limited to one run just three times in its last 71 games, according to the GCL website.

Elder is 3-1 and Moeller falls to 5-1.

Sycamore 4, Lakota East 3: Senior pitcher Greg Simpson led the Aviators to the upset of No. 6 East. Simpson pitched a complete game and went 3-for-4 with a triple and scored the game-winning run.

Tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Simpson led off the inning with a triple. Senior first basmeman Sean Clayton, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI, singled to lead Sycamore to the walk-off victory.

Sycamore improved to 6-0, 4-0 in the Greater Miami Conference, a remarkable start after just winning five games in 2013. Lakota East, who is ranked sixth, fell to 1-4, 0-4 in the GMC.

Cincinnati Country Day 5, Seven Hills 1: Junior Cam Alldred led the way on the mound and at the plate for the Indians. Alldred allowed just one hit and struck out 12 for his first win. Alldred went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Tied 1-1 in the fifth inning, Alldred belted a two-run double for what proved to be the winning runs. The Indians scored four total in the inning to pull away. Sophomore shortstop Greg Foster was 2-for-3 and junior Dima Warner went 2-for-2.

Cincinnati Country Day improved to 2-0 this season, while Seven Hills fell to 1-3.

Glen Este 1, Loveland 0 (eight innings): Junior right-hander Zach Jones pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing only five hits.

Senior right fielder Tyler Burdick drove in junior second baseman Jake Neeley in the bottom of the eighth.

Softball

Milford 4, Turpin 0: Milford sophomore pitcher Hannah Huffer had her attempt at a no-hitter broken up with one out in the seventh inning, but she was able to throw a complete-game shutout and improve to 5-0.

Milford was led by freshman catcher Kelsey Seitz who went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Milford junior first baseman Shelby Kirk went 3-for-4 to help her team remain unbeaten (6-0).

Oak Hills 7, Mount Notre Dame 1: Junior Sammy Sagers hit a grand slam in the first inning. Sagers was 2-for-3, adding a double. Junior pitcher Brooke Shad added two RBI while picking up her third win.

Badin 10, Carroll 0 (six innings): Senior pitcher Stephanie Clark allowed just two hits and sturck out eight batters in her shutout win. Senior shortstop Crystal Raines went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, helping Badin improve to 5-2 this season. Carroll fell to 0-2.

Clermont Northeastern 7, Georgetown 5: CNE took the lead for good in the sixth inning behind junior catcher Allison Gilkerson who went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore third baseman Lindsay Wright was 2-for-4 with a triple.

Williamsburg 4, McNicholas 2: Williamsburg scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to remain unbeaten and hand McNick its first loss of the season. Williamsburg was led by sophomore Morgan Gullett who was 3-for-4 and junior Kennedy Clark who was 4-for-4.

Deer Park 8, Taylor 2: Freshman pitcher Jenna Shepard struck out 10 batters to improve to 6-0.

Junior Olivia Liggett went 2-for-4, while freshman Makenzie Sawyer was 2-for-3, helping the Wildcats improve to 7-0.

Glen Este 13, Anderson 2 (five innings): Senior starting pitcher Bailey Miller threw a no-hitter. in a win over Anderson to improve to 2-0. Junior third baseman Meghan Downey went 4-for-4 from thate plate with a double.
