Kentucky State Police detectives are investigating a police involved shooting Saturday that left a man dead in rural northern Gallatin County.

Gallatin County Deputy Edwin Caldwell was dispatched to Highway 16 for reports of an intoxicated person around 5 p.m. Calwdell was approached by 41-year-old Gary Burdine, who pulled a gun and threatened to shoot the deputy.

Caldwell then shot Burdine, who died at the scene.

The shooting occurred sometime around 5:30 p.m. on Ky 16, the dispatcher said. The deputy was not injured, according to police.

Sheriff Josh Neale said his deputy was responding to call of an intoxicated man. After talking to occupants of the house, the deputy was walking back to his cruiser when he heard someone following. The deputy turned around and the man was brandishing a firearm, Neale said. The deputy opened fire, killing the man.

The name of the shooting victim was not released Saturday.

The shooting comes less than three years after Neale was shot by a suspect during a domestic violence call. Neale was shot in the abdomen on Sept. 21, 2011 by a man armed with a .357 magnum revolver. The man opened fire on Neale when he arrived at the home in Glencoe.

The man then fatally shot himself.
