Police Chief Jeffery Blackwell was recognized for his strategy in tackling race issues by BBC News in an article published online Thursday.

The article, written by reporter Aleem Maqbool, praises Blackwell for his community relations and commitment to "breaking down some of the deep mistrust between black communities and the police."

The Cincinnati Police Department, its policies instituted after the unrest in 2001, and Blackwell have all been in the news nationally following protests on police shootings.

Blackwell told the BBC reporter about his strategy to take officers out of their patrol cars and put them on the streets to engage with people more.

"We want our officers to have more compassion for people, especially people who need us the most." Blackwell said in the article. "And those are generally people who are black, people of color and people in inner-city America."
