Updated July 18, 2017: Not only is Ray Tensing off the hook for murder charges, but Samuel DuBose’s survivors can’t pursue a civil case against the former University of Cincinnati police officer.

The University of Cincinnati entered into a settlement with the family of the slain motorist in January 2016 that included all potential defendants, including Tensing, according to DuBose attorney Al Gerhardstein.

The settlement provided the family with:

  • Payment of $4.85 million.
  • Tuition-free UC undergraduate education for DuBose’s 12 children, with an estimated value of $500,000.
  • An eventual on-campus memorial to DuBose.
  • An apology from then-UC President Santa Ono.
  • An invitation to participate in Community Advisory Committee meetings aimed at creating comprehensive reform in the university police department.
