Major Mike Horton (second from left) of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, briefs three Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers after they arrived at the scene on southbound I-75, just south of Sharon Road.

EVENDALE – Body camera video apparently shows the altercation Tuesday along Interstate 75 that officials said led a Glendale police officer to shoot a man, wounding him.

Police say the man who was shot, Javier Pablo Aleman, 46, is a fugitive wanted by Baltimore County Maryland Police in connection with a homicide. He is in stable condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Aleman is a suspect in the killing of Victor Adolfo Serrano, who was stabbed to death on March 17, according to the Baltimore County Police Department. Officers found Serrano dead after they were called to a home in Dundalk, Maryland for a report of a cardiac arrest. This incident remains under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit.

The officer who shot Aleman has been identified as Joshua Hilling, 31. He was not injured in the incident.

Investigators had not viewed the video Tuesday afternoon, but said they expected to download and view it Tuesday evening.

"This is a perfect example of why we have body cameras," Hamilton County sheriff's Maj. Mike Horton told reporters. The agency is handling the investigation.

The shooting happened after Hilling, in his police cruiser, approached Aleman to offer assistance as he walked along the highway's southbound lanes.

Hilling has been with the Glendale Police Department for four years. He worked part time until being elevated to full-time status in January, officials said.

Hilling, before letting Aleman into his cruiser, searched Aleman's bag and found a knife, Horton said. There was an altercation and Hilling shot Aleman in the abdomen, Horton said.

"He had a confrontation with a police officer, and he ended up getting shot," Horton said.

The fixed-blade knife was described as being between 8 and 12 inches long.

At about 1:30 p.m., the officer told dispatchers that he shot a man who had a knife.

According to archived police dispatch audio, Hilling says: "One shot! ...Subject shot only in the abdomen! Still has the knife!"

The officer then says Aleman is "not following any orders." Paramedics were soon dispatched to the scene, and police closed the highway.

Aleman was eventually taken into custody and transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Police investigate in the southbound lanes of I-75, just south of Sharon Road, where a Glendale Police officer shot a man who was armed with a knife.

Glendale Police Chief Dave Warman said Hilling was "very upset and very shaken up" after the incident. Warman said it was the first time in at least two decades that his agency has had an officer-involved shooting.

The interstate's southbound lanes near Glendale-Milford Road were closed more than three hours.

No further details were immediately available.
