What's that smell in Cheviot?

A strong odor in the Cheviot area has residents concerned and authorities searching for the cause.

Cheviot fire Chief Bob Klein said he's received multiple complaints about a smell in the area. The first complaint was logged about 8 a.m. Thursday, with caller descriptions of the smell ranging from burning rubber to natural gas.

No respiratory issues have been reported  and Klein said he doesn't believe there's a public safety risk.

A fire crew was dispatched for the report of natural gas, but didn't detect any natural gas, he said.

Four hours on from the first complaint, Klein said he's only been able to rule out a few possibilities.

"Usually when we have a smell like this, it's a fire from Cincinnati," Klein said. "This is covering our whole area."

Fire officials said Duke Energy is on the scene to assist in the investigation.
