Star-director Don Cheadle looks at a monitor between shots on "Miles Ahead," his movie about jazz great Miles Davis, on Seventh Street near Elm Street on July 7, the first day of filming.

Cincinnati-shot "Miles Ahead" is still days away from its Sunday premiere at the 53rd New York Film Festival.

But the first clip from the Don Cheadle project has been released online – and the movie is already getting some positive ink in The New York Times.

Writer A. O. Scott said readers who want "a jump on possible Oscar nominees for 2017" should check out "Miles Ahead." (He also praised performances from Cincinnati-shot "Carol" earlier in the piece.)

"Blending musical biopic standards (ill-starred marriage, drug addiction, record-company shenanigans) with caper-movie riffs (pistol-whippings, car chases, sketchy deals with shady characters), 'Miles Ahead' at its best is as witty and knowing as Mr. Cheadle’s sly, whispery performance," he writes. "The music is pretty good, too."

Starring Don Cheadle, the movie about the jazz great was filmed entirely in Greater Cincinnati in summer 2014. "Miles Ahead," Cheadle's directorial debut, also stars Ewan McGregor and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film festival is Sept. 25–Oct. 11.

The production came to the Queen City soon after production wrapped on "Carol."

Like "Carol," "Miles Ahead" is also set in New York City. The screenplay focuses on the end of Davis' five-year period away from the public eye in 1979 when the innovative musician and a Rolling Stone reporter (McGregor) work together to recover a stolen recording.
