Could Ohio soon see online voter registration?

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohioans could register to vote online under a proposal that may soon see action in the swing state’s Senate.

The bill would direct Ohio’s election chief to create a secure, online registration process for voters. Applicants would need to provide an Ohio driver’s license or state ID card number to register using the online system.

Currently, Ohio voters can update their addresses online.

Secretary of State Jon Husted told the Senate Government Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday that he’s fully supportive of the proposal.

Committee Chairman Bill Coley said the legislation could get a vote next week — if the measure was ready and if Senate leaders agreed.

A similar bill is pending in the House.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger says the House is open to the change.
