Obama to announce a name change for the USA's tallest mountain

After President Obama visits Alaska on Monday, they will literally have to redraw the maps. Obama will announce Mount McKinley — the 20,237-foot mountain and the tallest in North America — has been renamed Denali, as it was originally known by Alaska Natives before it was renamed to boost the presidential candidacy of Republican William McKinley. The order was signed Friday, but the White House asked that it be announced Monday as part of Obama's trip to Alaska to highlight the effects of climate change in the Arctic. The White House said the name change "recognizes the sacred status of Denali to generations of Alaska Natives."

Princess Diana's tragic death occurred 18 years ago

Monday marks the 18th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, who was killed at age 37 in a Paris tunnel along with then-beau Dodi Fayed and their driver on Aug. 30, 1997. Although online news sites were still in their infancy, her death was one of the first big news stories to break on the Internet. Ultimately, an 18-month-long French inquiry ruled that Henri Paul, the security chief at the couple's hotel, was drunk when he lost control of their Mercedes at high speed, but the public placed the blame squarely on the paparazzi who were pursuing the couple. Not much has changed in the two decades since the tragedy, as the tabloid business has continued with little in the way of effective legal restrictions.

Don't expect 'Deflategate' to run out of air anytime soon

Although a federal judge could rule as soon as Monday on Tom Brady's case against the NFL when all of the interested parties will be present in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, don't expect that to be the end of "Deflategate." No matter which side prevails, expect the other side to appeal. Likely to be decided quickly, however, is whether Brady will be able to start the season opener. Pending the appeal, the NFL would have to be granted a stay if it were to lose the case in order to prevent Brady from starting the season, and Brady would have to be granted a stay in order to start the season if he were to lose the case.

Suspect in murder of Houston-area deputy due in court

Shannon J. Miles, the man suspected in the Houston-area shooting of Deputy Darren Goforth, a 10-year veteran with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, is due in court for his arraignment on a charge of capital murder. Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was fatally shot in the back late Friday while filling his patrol car in northwest Harris County. Sheriff Ron Hickman said ballistics tests showed a match between the weapon used to kill Goforth and a weapon in Miles' possession. Police have not found a clear motive in the case, but Hickman linked the shooting to a national backlash over several recent killings of unarmed black people by police officers.

Mourners gather at a gas station in Houston on Aug. 29, 2015, to pay their respects at a makeshift memorial for Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth, who was shot and killed while filling his patrol car.
