Timeline: Shooting death of Sam DuBose

July 19: University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing shoots 43-year-old Samuel DuBose in the head in Mount Auburn, killing him following a traffic stop for a missing front license plate.

July 21: Samuel DuBose’s family and University of Cincinnati students hold a peaceful rally on U.C.’s main campus at lunchtime, demanding answers on the shooting from university Police Chief Jason Goodrich.

July 24: The Enquirer files a lawsuit against Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters seeking the release of body camera video footage to clarify what happened during the traffic stop that ended with Samuel DuBose dead. Tensing had claimed that DuBose’s vehicle had dragged him and he’d feared for his life.

July 26: One week after Samuel DuBose is killed, his family, friends and Black Lives Matter hold a demonstration and march on the University of Cincinnati Campus.

July 28: Samuel DuBose is remembered by his family and friends at his funeral service at Church of the Living God in Avondale. His mother, Audrey DuBose, says, “I want justice for my son.”

July 29: Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announces that a grand jury has indicted former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing for murder and voluntary manslaughter.

•Tensing turns himself in and is booked into the Hamilton County jail.

•Deters releases Tensing’s body camera video footage of the incident, in which there is no indication that Tensing was dragged.

•In the streets of Cincinnati, people call for justice in peaceful demonstrations.

July 30: Former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing enters a plea of not guilty during his arraignment in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court. Judge Megan Shanahan sets Tensing’s bond at $1 million, and cheers break out in the courtroom. The judge admonishes those who cheered. Tensing is released from jail after his father posts a bond of $100,085 at 6:35 p.m.

•University of Cincinnati police officers Phillip Kidd and David Lindenschmidt are placed on paid leave as a result of an internal investigation. The suspensions followed the public release of Kidd’s body camera footage, in which the officer can be heard corroborating Tensing’s claim that he had been dragged by DuBose’s car.

July 31: Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announces that a Hamilton County grand jury heard testimony regarding the two University of Cincinnati police officers who were involved with the investigation into the death of DuBose and declined to indict them.
