Leah Still faces transplant complication
Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Devon Still has kept us up to date on how his daughter Leah's battle with neuroblastoma has been going through his Instagram account – images and messages that are often uplifting.
Shortly after her fifth birthday in early May, Still noted how his daughter's cancer was in remission, but that she needed to undergo a stem cell transplant to help stimulate new bone marrow growth.
On Friday night, Still asked for prayers as a complication arose from the transplant.
"VOD" is an acronym for veno-occlusive disease, which is a complication that can affect the liver. It is a common post-transplant complication, but a brief available in the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing said that while "mild cases resolve on their own, severe cases of VOD carry a high mortality rate."
