A man identifying himself as a Boone County Sheriff's deputy or lieutenant is conducting a scam in the area, according to the sheriff's office.

On Friday or Saturday, a man identifying himself as Deputy Marshall or Lieutenant Weaver has called approximately six different people and told them he has a warrant for their arrest, according to a news release.

The man then said the victims could fix the situation by going to Kroger and purchasing two $500 debit cards. Once the cards were activated, he asked the victims to call him back and read the card numbers.

"Needless to say, this is a scam," said Major Tom Scheben, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, in a news release. "The Boone County Sheriff's Office and its personnel have never conducted business like this and never will."

The man has used the same telephone number in all six cases.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040 or the Boone County Sheriff's Office at 859-334-2175.
