Women’s advice to men: Clip those hairs, trim those nails

Jill Haney

Last week I had the opportunity to present to a very engaging group of supervisors from some of the best companies in the Dayton area. As is often the case, my presentation went a bit off agenda when we began discussing men’s grooming tips.

Interestingly enough, the women had a lot to say about mens’ grooming. I think it would behoove many men to take note on what this group of women found distasteful.

Lesson number one, keep nose hair trimmed. It can be quite shocking what pops out overnight and a quick look in the mirror during the morning shave is recommended. In addition, a quick look on the tip of the nose for any wayward hairs goes along way in looking well groomed.

Eyebrows frame the face and well-groomed eyebrows can really open up the eyes. It’s been a little over four years since the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and what I remember most about the wedding is the very bushy eyebrows of the Archbishop of Canterbury. I wish someone would have suggested that he trim them back. Men can even have their eyebrows professionally cleaned up, but don’t ever have them shaped.

Cleaning up the back of the neck in between haircuts is a really good idea. Any new growth on the back of the neck that exceeds 1/4-inch should be cleaned up. I recommend a quick touch up once every 7-10 days. You don’t want your neck hair to be an extension of your back hair. Speaking of back hair, I encourage you to shave the hair that creeps up on the back of the shoulders. A bit too unsightly for most women.

Ear hair is very much like nose hair and it pops up very quickly. Your barber or stylist should clip or wax your ears at every appointment, but please check your ears in a magnifying mirror in between cuts and groom as necessary. Very few things will age a man like ear hair.

Nails that are short and clean are always in style and any long, dirty nails will always be out of style. It really is a hygiene issue.

Last, but not least, trim your chest hair when it begins to pop out over the undershirt or the dress shirt. The 1970s are long gone.

Fair or not, we live in a superficial society where beauty and youth is celebrated. Looking well-groomed can only enhance how a man is perceived and make you look younger. Adding these grooming tips to your daily, weekly and monthly regime can only yield upside benefits. Your spouse or significant other will thank you as well.
