Dr. James Helmsworth attends a celebration of his life at St. Francis DeSales Parish is East Walnut Hills on Sunday, March 1. Helmsworth was honored by University of Cincinnati President Santa Ono, the City of Cincinnati and several patients he had saved during his career.

Dr. James Helmsworth was laid to rest Monday after he passed away from complications due to pneumonia at 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning. He was 100.

"He lived a large life and lived it well," said Louise Stakelin, a close friend.

A public viewing is planned for noon on Monday at Saint Francis de Sales Church on Madison Road in East Walnut Hills. A service will immediate follow the viewing.

He is survived by his two daughters, Nancy Helmsworth, 59, of Portland, Oregon; Mary Helmsworth Hamby, 58, of White Plains, New York; and his son, Tom Helmsworth, 59, of Cincinnati. He had 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Earlier this year, Dr. Helmsworth celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by friends, fellow church members and some of the people he helped during his long medical career.
