Winton Lakes is frozen over Thursday morning. Even colder temperatures are expected this weekend.

Rain and snow could mix to create messy conditions this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Before that, more brutal cold is predicted Friday.

Temperatures in the single digits are possible much of the morning, with mostly sunny skies expected to give way to a high temperature near 19 degrees Friday afternoon.

A return to zero degrees is possible Friday night, with a low around minus 2 predicted overnight.

On Saturday, there is a slight chance for snow starting around 10 p.m. High temperatures near 29 degrees and less than a half-inch of accumulation are expected, according to the weather service.

Overnight snow is expected to continue until temperatures increase to above freezing around 10 a.m. Sunday. Then, it's expected to rain.

The weather service is forecasting a 90 percent chance of rain throughout the day as warmer temperatures keep the snow at bay. Approaching midnight, rain is expected to mix with snow and continue into the early hours of Monday.

Weekend forecast:

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 29. Snow likely Saturday night with a low around 23.

Sunday: Snow likely before 9 a.m., then mostly rain until close to midnight when there is a chance for snow to creep back into the region. High of almost 40 degrees.

Monday: Mostly cloudy with a high near 35. Some leftover snow before 7 a.m. and another chance for a wintry mix of conditions Monday night.

Temperatures never rose above freezing Thursday at Winton Lakes. More of the same is expected Friday.
