NKU cheerleaders deserved better

Cincinnati
Northern Kentucky University cheerleaders show their spirit during a January 2012 game.

I am a season ticket holder for Northern Kentucky University basketball. Senior members of the men's team were honored Feb. 28 by the athletic director and others and presented with framed jerseys prior to the game. The announcer gave statistics and history, and what looked like a professional photographer documented the occasion. In addition, posters/scorecards with their photos alone were distributed.

During a timeout in the first quarter, three senior cheerleaders (one male, two female) were called to the floor for at their last home game. The AD was not present (though only a few minutes had passed), statements were brief and there were no professional photos. They received small bouquets of flowers. The appreciation shown the cheerleaders was inappropriate compared to the team members, and this should be corrected. I would guess they work just as hard as the basketball team.

My husband and I take our granddaughter to the games, and that is not what she should see. As with many segments of society, this type of subtle and not-so-subtle behavior should be avoided at all cost.

What would basketball be without cheerleaders?
